Dr. phil. Nina Clara Tiesler

Nina Clara Tiesler, born 18th May 1968, Dr. phil. in Comparative Studies of Religion (with co-supervision in Sociology, University of Hannover, Germany, 2004), is a Research Fellow at the Institute of Social Sciences at the University of Lisbon (ICS-UL, a Centre of Excellence), working in the areas of Sociology and Anthropology with special focus on Migration Studies.

Having started research on Muslims and migration in Europe in 1992, she has been affiliated to the European Migration Centre and is since 2004 a member of the Bibliographical Network EURISLAM as well as co-ordinator of the international research networks MEL-net (Muslims in Lusophone Spaces, www.mel-net.ics.ul.pt) and Football Migration Network (www.diasbola.com).

She is at the editorial board of the Portuguese journal Migrations and member of the international board of editorial advisors for the Yearbook of Muslims in Europe (J. Nielsen et al, eds., Leiden: Brill).

Dr. Tiesler is also research active in the area of Sports & Migration and Studies in Leisure & Popular Culture, focussing on migrants, having co-ordinated an international team project on the role of leisure (here: football) among Portuguese Diaspora communities in six different countries across three continents, funded by the Foundation of Science and Technology (FCT), Portugal, 2007-2011.

In 2006, she was the youngest of ten internationally picked resident fellows at the Bellagio Dialogue on Migration at the Rockefeller Bellagio Study and Conference Centre.

She is author of two books, editor of six books and special journal issues, and has published 20 book chapters and 17 peer reviewed journal articles (among them three indexed at ISI and ESF, respectively) in English, German and Portuguese. Apart from being fluent in these three languages, she also reads and understands Spanish and French. She has presented more than 40 papers and two keynote speeches at conferences and international congresses in Germany, England, Portugal and Turkey and has organised 20 such events, workshops and panels in different countries, including in Angola.

Dr. Tiesler has held travel, doctoral and postdoctoral grants awarded by Marie Curie, Heinrich-Boell-Foundation (Berlin), Rockefeller Foundation, and by the Portuguese Foundation of Science and Technology (FCT).

At invitation of the coordinator Jorge Sampaio (in his role as High Representative of the United Nations for the Alliance of Civilization, www.unAoC.org ), she has joined the "Circle of Friends" in July 2007, a Portuguese sub-branch of the AoC which, similar to the "Group of Friends" (composed by states and international organizations), aims to promote inter-cultural and inter-religious dialogue among societies, dedicated to globally orientated policy-related questions derived from cultural, religious and ethnic diversity.
